Understanding Golf GPS Devices

So lets start with an understanding of what a golf GPS is. Golf GPS devices provide golfers with course information and distance measurements to assist in shot planning and decision-making. These units utilize satellite and mapping technologies to provide accurate and real-time data on course layout, location and distance to hazards, or other key points on the course. There are various types of golf GPS devices available, including handheld devices, wearable GPS watches, and smartphone apps. Each of these offer unique features and functionalities tailored to the needs of golfers.

The most popular features are distance measurements to the front, center, and back of greens, yardages to hazards and layup locations, shot tracking capabilities, scorekeeping, and hole layout graphics. Beginners should understand the basic functions and features of a golf GPS device in order to best choose the unit best suited to their preferences and playing style.

So with clear understanding of how golf GPS devices operate and the benefits they offer, beginners can add these tools into their golfing experience, helping to gain confidence and performance on the course.

Choosing the Right Golf GPS Device

It’s important to consider several factors to ensure that the chosen device meets your specific needs and preferences. Some of the factors to consider include the type of device (such as handheld, wearable, or smartphone app), ease of use, battery life, course coverage, and available features.

For most beginners, a user-friendly interface and basic distance measurement features are often all that is needed to enhance the golfing experience. It’s essential to understand the device’s ease of operation, as well as the brightness, clarity and readability of the display, especially under varying lighting conditions.

Some devices may offer extensive databases of preloaded courses, while others may require manual course mapping or downloads. Understanding the course coverage of a GPS device ensures that it aligns with the courses where you plan to play. There is nothing worse than buying a GPS only to find out it wont map your favorite golf course.

Battery life is an important consideration, particularly for beginners who may spend extended time on the course due to slow play in your group or the group you are following. Choosing a device with adequate battery life ensures the ability to get through the entire round of golf.

Getting Started with a Golf GPS Device

Once you have decided on a specific golf GPS device, the next step is to familiarize yourself with its setup and basic operation. Begin by unboxing the device or downloading the app  and reviewing the user manual to understand its features and functions.

Most GPS devices require some type of initial setup, including charging the battery, creating a user profile, and possibly downloading course data. Ensure that the device is fully charged and has your local course data before heading to the course to avoid disappointment during the golf round.

Play around with device’s user interface, buttons, and navigation menus. to get familiar with the device Take the time to explore the various screens and options available, such as distance measurements, hole layout graphics, and additional features.

Becoming comfortable with the GPS operation before heading to the golf course is a must. This practice session can help you navigate the device’s menus, understand its display, and interpret the information it provides.

My first GPS was a GolfShot Plus app for my IPhone. I was pretty excited to get it, but unfortunately couldnt get it to load my local golf course when I started my round. My fault for not learning how to use it first. Lesson learned, I ensured my course would load and I understood the features before I left the house for my next game. Now I wont say it made me a better golfer, but it did take a lot of guesswork out of my game for knowing how far my next shot would be. It was a very enjoyable game.

Utilizing Distance Measurements

Understanding how to interpret and utilize distance measurements provided by your golf GPS device is essential for making informed decisions on the course. Most GPS devices offer distance measurements to the front, center, and back of greens, as well as distances to hazards and key points on the course. Of course you need to check the flag location for the course on your day of play, as sometimes the pins aren’t in the exact spot the GPS says.

When using distance measurements, consider factors such as wind direction and speed, elevation changes, and potential hazards to accurately assess the distance required for each shot. My favorite method to gage the wind is to throw a small tuft of grass into the air and observe how the wind carries it. Use the distance measurements to select the best club and plan your approach. Also note any obstacles or hazards that may come into play.

It’s important to develop a consistent routine for referencing distance measurements during your round. I personally like to observer the distance as I approach the ball. I love knowing how far I hit the ball and it’s pretty elating to realize you hit a 250 yard drive.  It also helps me select a club while approaching the ball which helps reduce delay trying to assess my next shot.

By tracking the distance measuring of the GPS, including your last hit distance, and your next shot distance, you are likely to improve your shot accuracy, and elevate your overall performance and enjoyment on the course.

Navigating the Course

Your golf GPS device can be a valuable tool for gaining a better understanding of each hole’s layout. Use the GPS to familiarize yourself with the hole layout, including the location of hazards, bunkers, and doglegs.

As you approach each hole, refer to the GPS device to visualize the layout and plan your strategy accordingly. Some GPS can identify potential landing areas, display or visualize shot trajectories, and assess the distance to key targets or hazards using the hole layout graphics along with hazard yardages.

Good place to use a golf GPS

One of the best benefits is when faced with blind shots or obscured landing areas, the GPS can provide a visual into the layout beyond your line of sight, helping you make more informed decisions about shot placement and club selection. I remember my first round at a semi private golf course here in Saskatoon. I hit a fairway wood that was a beautiful shot, sailing straight up the middle and over a crest. As I approached my ball, my heart sank as I realized I had hit into a water hazard. A GPS sure would have come in handy on that shot.

It’s pretty clear that by using your golf GPS device for course navigation, you can gain a definite advantage, avoid potential hazards, and approach each hole with greater confidence and clarity. This game aid can contribute to improved scoring and enjoyment during your round.

Leveraging Additional Features

Many of the mid range and advanced golf GPS devices offer a range of additional features beyond basic distance measurements These may include shot tracking, scorekeeping, statistics analysis, greens in regulation, and advanced course management capabilities.

You could explore the shot tracking feature to record your shots and analyze your performance after the round. This can offer valuable insights into shot patterns, distances, and areas for improvement in your game. I personally have not spent too much time in this area, but maybe that’s why I can’t break 80.

The best feature in my opinion is scorekeeping function to easily track your scores and monitor your progress throughout the round. Some golf GPS may also offer statistical analysis, allowing you to review performance trends and identify strengths and weaknesses in your game. The one area I really like to look at from my statistics is number of putts. Its an easy to monitor stat and one that can improve your score tremendously if you can dial in on this skill.

By using these additional features, you can gain a deeper understanding of your game, track your progress, and make better decisions to elevate your performance on the course. These tools provide the means to contribute to your overall improvement and enjoyment of the game. And a great fun round of golf is very satisfying.
